Kankakee Sands.  Near Morocco, Indiana, this special 8,000-acre prairie and wetland restoration, owned and managed by The Nature Conservancy, was originally part of the 500,000-acre Grand Marsh of the Kankakee River. Over 200 bird species have been recorded since restoration began in 2001. The destination is a two-hour drive from Evanston and carpooling is recommended. Meet to arrange carpooling at 6:15 a.m. at the far east side of the Westfield/Old Orchard parking lot, NW corner of Golf Road and Skokie Highway, in the Nordstrom area. We will depart at 6:30, return approximately 5 pm. Dress for the weather, bring a sack lunch and water or liquids. On arrival at the site, a light continental breakfast and coffee will be provided by the leader. Requred RSVP to leader Mark Vaughan by May 7.
