January 24, 2012 PROGRAM: The Field Museum's Emerging Pathogens Project: a Pilot Study of Birds and their Parasites and Pathogens “The Field Museum’s Emerging Pathogens Project: A Pilot Study of Birds and their Parasites and Pathogens:” As a staff scientist at the Field Museum, Jason Weckstein is part of a team conducting a pilot survey of birds (and small mammals) along with their parasites and pathogens. The first comprehensive surveys conducted by the team focused on various sites in Malawi. The main goal was to document the biodiversity of parasites and pathogens found on and in birds. Thirty to 70% of life on earth is parasitic yet we know nearly nothing about this critical segment of life. February 28, 2012 PROGRAM: Birding with Buddha in the Eastern Himalayas The Eastern Himalayas of Bhutan and India have only recently opened to tourists but have quickly grown popular with birders because of their unique avifauna, stunning scenery, and fascinating culture. The Bird Club’s Josh Engel has had the great fortune of visiting the region several times in his capacity as an international birding guide, where he has developed an inordinate fondness for both the region’s birds and its spicy food. Illustrated with a wonderful selection of photos, he will take us through the mammal-filled grasslands of India’s Kaziranga National Park before ascending into the high Himalayas where birds like babblers, hornbills, leafbirds and cutia abound.

April 24, 2012 PROGRAM: Poetry is Not Just for the Birds Birds live in poetry, as themselves and as metaphors, in as astounding a profusion and diversity as in life. John Elliott, Education Manager of the Forest Preserve District of Cook County, will lead us through a sampling of different poetic styles and subjects, discussing how writers from the past and present use poetry to enhance their own appreciation of the world around them. Anyone interested in the natural world and birds can be inspired to incorporate writing and/or reading poetry as another way of enjoying the behavior and antics of our feathered friends. Participants are encouraged to bring a sample of their own or a favorite bird poem.
