Lighthouse Beach

eBird Hotspot: Lighthouse Beach, Cook County, IL, US

Lighthouse Beach, located at 2611 Sheridan Road, is best known to birders as a good place to see waterbirds, especially ducks, loons, and gulls, from late fall through early spring. Often in late fall, a large flock of Greater and Lesser Scaup and Redheads is present in the lake off the beach, and other species regularly join them. Gulls like to sit on the break wall, and occasionally a third species will join the usual Ring- billed and Herring Gulls there. The dunes, woods, and other areas of the park can be good for migrants in spring and fall. This is the site of Jens Jensen Gardens being restored by volunteers.
